Vieux Carré 2

This drybrush watercolor captures the garden of my childhood home in the French Quarter—a Creole cottage where I spent the first nineteen years of my life before moving to Paris. The house itself was remarkable, a jewel of architecture and history, but it’s the garden that continues to haunt my imagination.

Sprawling and lush, the property stretched all the way through the block, an oasis of calm just a few doors down from the wild revelry of Bourbon Street. At its heart was a long pool that mirrored the sky, a serene path running through the riot of foliage, and a sense of endless possibility. It was a place that seemed to breathe, alive with dappled light, overgrown greenery, and shadows that danced as the sun moved.

In this piece, I sought to capture the mythical quality the garden still holds in my memory. The interplay of vibrant blues and greens against the warmth of sunlight recalls the timeless, golden afternoons of my youth. Even now, I can remember the sensation of stepping into this hidden paradise—a world apart from the noise and chaos just beyond its gates. This garden, in all its untamed beauty, remains a refuge in my mind, a place of solace and inspiration that I return to again and again.
