Studio Nude

This watercolor was the first time I worked with the young woman depicted in the painting, who I’ll call Vera. I painted this in my Istanbul studio, where the proximity to the apartment building across the way means I can only open the curtains partway for privacy. That late afternoon, the partial opening let in just enough light to create this beautifully dramatic effect. The interplay of light and shadow brought an unexpected intensity to the composition, highlighting Vera’s form and the surrounding pieces in the studio. It turned the session into something intimate and cinematic—almost like the light itself was collaborating with us.
