Splendid Palace
I painted this in the summer of 2019 in the bathroom of our suite at the Splendid Palace on Büyükada Island in Istanbul. The light in that old hotel had a quiet sharpness to it, cutting across the room like a blade. I remember the way she stood—weight shifted, one foot barely touching the ground, her back catching the light in broken streaks. There was something raw about the moment, the intimacy of it. The sink, the exposed pipes, the stool with a rumpled cloth—it all felt like it had been waiting for her to step into the scene. I worked quickly, letting the washes of black and gray find their own weight. The stillness of it, the quiet tension in her posture—that was what I wanted to hold onto.
